I've always been a fan of praising effort rather than natural tendencies.  I think that a child feels the empty praise of "you're smart" when he hasn't made the effort to get that "A."

The Brainology^® program is a fun, award-winning program that helps upper elementary, middle school and high school students gain confidence and motivation to learn by teaching them about the brain, how to strengthen it, and how to apply brain-friendly study skills.  We help them cultivate a growth mindset, which leads to growth and learning-oriented behavior.

The online program was developed by one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of motivation, Stanford University professor Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D. and her colleague Lisa Sorich Blackwell, Ph.D., based on the growth mindset research they have pursued for more than 20 years.
